Where Should a Kitchen Go? The Fundamentals of Kitchen Placement
Every home has a kitchen — that much needs no introduction. What's less obvious, and far more consequential for how a home actually functions, is where that kitchen sits within the overall floor plan. Get the placement right, and the kitchen becomes a quiet, efficient hub that supports daily life. Get it wrong, and no amount of good cabinetry or appliance selection can fully compensate.
Kitchen placement is governed by two distinct considerations: vertical placement and horizontal placement. Understanding both — and how they interact — is the first real step in kitchen design, well before questions of layout, materials, or style come into play.
Vertical Placement: What Sits Above and Below
Vertical placement addresses a simple but important question: on which floor should the kitchen sit, and what should occupy the spaces directly above or below it?
The governing principle here is plumbing. Kitchens require substantial drainage and water delivery infrastructure — supply lines, waste lines, and often a dedicated drainage stack. Rather than isolating this infrastructure, good design consolidates it. This means the kitchen should ideally align vertically with other water-dependent spaces: toilets, bathrooms, and similar wet areas.
This isn't a stylistic preference — it's a practical one. Stacking wet areas vertically shortens pipe runs, simplifies waste stack design, reduces the risk of leaks traveling through unrelated parts of the building, and lowers both construction and long-term maintenance costs. In multi-story homes, this single principle can significantly influence how the entire floor plan is organized from the ground up.
Horizontal Placement: What Sits Alongside
If vertical placement is about plumbing logic, horizontal placement is about functional logic — which spaces on the same floor need to relate directly to the kitchen.
The kitchen functions as a hub for several interconnected household activities, and its horizontal neighbors should reflect that. Spaces that typically need to be adjacent to, or closely connected with, the kitchen include:
- The front door — for bringing in groceries and deliveries
- The dining room — for serving food with minimal travel distance
- Food storage — pantries and larder spaces
- Scullery and laundry areas — often grouped with the kitchen for shared plumbing and utility needs
- Rubbish storage or disposal — for hygienic, low-friction waste management
- Outdoor clothes drying areas — frequently accessed alongside laundry duties
- Toddler play areas — so a parent working in the kitchen can supervise young children without leaving the room
Notice that these relationships aren't uniform. Some require direct physical access — a door connecting the kitchen to the dining room, for instance. Others require only a visual connection — a window or sightline toward a play area is often more valuable than a direct route. Distinguishing between these two types of adjacency (a route versus a sightline) is a subtle but important design skill.
Orientation in Small Homes
In smaller homes, where every square meter matters and rooms can't be endlessly subdivided, orientation becomes a practical tool for solving multiple problems at once. Kitchens in these homes are best positioned toward the northeast or northwest, ideally opening visually onto the foyer, front door, and children's play area.
This orientation serves two purposes: it takes advantage of favorable natural light conditions, and it allows the person working in the kitchen to stay aware of who is entering the home and where the children are—without requiring a larger footprint or additional rooms.
Dividing Kitchen Duties in Larger Homes
Larger homes have more flexibility, and with that flexibility comes an opportunity: rather than cramming every kitchen-related function into a single room, the various duties of the kitchen can be distributed across several purpose-built spaces — a laundry, a utility room, a pantry, a scullery — typically organized into a distinct household or "service" wing.
This division serves a practical goal: containing noise and odor. Cooking smells, the clatter of dishwashing, and the operational noise of laundry equipment can all be isolated from main living areas when these functions are separated out. The kitchen itself remains focused on food preparation and cooking, while adjacent support spaces absorb the secondary activities that would otherwise crowd it.
Kitchen Types: A Preview
Beyond placement, kitchens can also be classified by the combination of functions they perform within their allotted space — for instance, a kitchen paired with dining, a kitchen paired with storage, or a kitchen paired with a pantry.
